Defrag your harddrive. Install SP1. Delete FSX.CFG and rerun FSX, which will then rebuild a new FSX.CFG file for you .. also run a virus scanner and a malware/spyware scanner.

Online scanning tool: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Adaware/spyware scanner: http://www.lavasoftu..._aware_free.php

Deffragger for Vista: http://www.disktrix.com/

Three important things:

1. Switch off your sidebar! You'll better run Windows only in "clean" configuration (execute msconfig).
2. Turn off your virus scanner! OK, you might worry about viruses. But when the AutoProtect or however they call it is activated, your computer allways scans all of your processes which causes an extreme slowdown. And if you've ever had more than one virus scanner installed, you shouldn't even wonder about those issues.
3. Turn off Windows Aero. You should only use the Vista Basic or Windows Classic interface.

FSX turns aero off .. Theres no difference in FPS with a windows basic or the full animated aero.
