Hi guys,

I always wanted to know why people find virtual heavy metal airline flying fun? I mean, you start up the engine, go through checklists, takeoff, then reach cruise altitude. Now this is what concerns me. Who would want to stare at a cockpit for 3 hours while there is nothing to do? In my opinion, flying low and slow in a j3 cub under ORBX scenery would be much more enjoyable.

So i hope i understand whats the big deal about heavy metal flying, and how it is fun.

Cheers

Alex

I do both, low and slow...and NY to LA.

As for the long flights in a jetliner, for me it's all about doing something I cant do in real life. I enjoy the prep, takeoff, navigation, and landing. All of it. i like to keep track of where I am and look around outside when im over someplace interesting.
I dont sit at my computer every second for the long flights. I have 2 monitors, so I may browse the web or work on other projects while my flight is in progress.

Flight Simulator is just that, a simulation of flying. Each user can take that to whatever extreme he chooses, and the game allows.

I dont see it as any different than the guy who sits behind a steering wheel for hours racing in a Nascar, Indy or Gran Prix racing game.

Flying a large complex plane with the procedures and checklsts gives a great sense of accomplshment.

  • Interests:I have always been an aviation junkie ever sincew my dad took me to Maguire AFB when I was just 6 years of age. Wanted to be a pilot for all of my life and instead wound up a locomotive engineer. The rail buffs look at me in the cab and salivate at the thought of climbing in while I am steady looking up to the sky for another plane. I have about 30 hours real world but had to give it up due to financial considerations. Hope to resume one day if I live long enough. I Love what flight simulation has given me and am always glad to share with any who think I can be of help.

I have been simming since FS 2000 and learned to fly almost all the different types of aircraft available. I started with the C182 and couldn't wait to progress to the jets. After maybe 3 years I finally was ready and bought my favorite jetliner; The Boeing 727 put out by Dreamfleet. It was a huge challenge as that aircraft had a crew of three. I installed the Delco INS and learned how to use that nav system. During the flights scenery never mattered because I was too busy tending to chores of managing the plane. I latter learned to fly the glass cockpit stuff, the PMDG 737 NG and the Level-D 767 but they fly themselves once the FMC is programmed. Now in FSX there is no Dreamfleet and the few classic jet models aren't nearly in Dreamfleets class I have been back to props and loving it. I use Air Hauler to create a virtual air cargo company and work the Pacific NW. I have been using the new ORBX NA Blue scenery package and it was worth the wait. Really looking foward to the OZx guys going to work on his package. It is simply amazing.

I enjoy the heavy metal for a few reasons.

First off, some day I hope to be flying a jet for someone and I like to do the best to simulate that at my computer.

Not all of us heavy metal guys actually are paying attention to the flight the whole time, I usually fly my super long ones overnight so I can nap or when I have a paper to write. Its rare I will be there for the whole 5 hours of my average flight.

Its also tremendously satisfying. Flying JFK to LHR using the real world procedures and routes and successfully completing the flight is something that I can't just match with other flying.

And I'm also a busy person, so flying long hauls usually works out well. I can set and forget. \

Plus there is the Tu154M. Thats almost reason enough ;)

I like using very small aircraft like the cub and cessnas etc etc. I usually do flight from my closest airport leeds bradford Uk to other places in europe like sweden, italy and then go back to sunny england.

Personally, I think realism = fun. I don't do many long hauls, but when I do fly them, I feel a sense of accomplishment.

I flew my first VATSIM flight yesterday and have been heavily reviewing the Level-D 767, so I hope to take the realism another notch up now. :D

Thanks for all the replys people :)

BTW Brendan if your going to fly the Tu154M, you might as well purchase an explosion addon for the CS 727 :P:P:P

on a more serious note, what makes the PMDG MD11 so much fun to fly if the hole damn plane depends on auto pilot?

Cheers

Alex
